The characters stay the same, but everything about the “prequel” had almost nothing to do with the now story.
See I’m not getting the “didn’t meet in this reality” thing.
I’m expecting that either James will see Javier and see old decisions back to haunt him, or Javier will see James with Kenzie and get angry that someone else’s life is moving on while his is still trapped in a pattern he doesn’t much like anymore.

If you go back to the prequel… it was stated as mostly unrelated to the current story.
Unless it was just a poorly worded description by the creator.
